An Association of breeders & retailers setting higher standards

CBS is a collective group of avian breeders and retailers selling higher quality birds, and associated products, to the pet and breeder markets.
These dedicated aviculturists have joined to promote quality standards and to document success in rearing and selling pet birds that achieve customer satisfaction.

The CBS Veterinary Advisor is Brian Speer, DVM, 1999 President of the American Avian Veterinarian Association.

All members are Model Aviculture Program Certified.
Each facility is inspected regularly by a veterinarian who assesses:

• cage size to be suitable for the species,
• diet to be suitable for the species,
• safety/security of cages,
• quarantine procedures to prevent introducing disease into the facility,
• isolation procedure to prevent illness from spreading,
• record-keeping,
• health status determination,
• cleanliness and sanitation,
• rodent control,
• food storage adequacy,
• sanitation of nursery,
• clutch separation,
• weighing & physical development of young,
• freshness of hand feeding formula,
• disinfecting of hand feeding utensils,
• appropriate brooder and nursery temperatures,
• bill of sale for each bird sold,
• written instructions regarding nutrition, husbandry and care provided to each customer.

MAP reviews the veterinarian's inspection report and decides whether MAP certification is appropriate. All customers should expect at least these minimum MAP standards from the facility, for any bird purchased, in order to be assured of obtaining a quality bird.

In addition to the MAP standards, CBS members have agreed to:

• make their flock veterinary production records available to the professional advisor of CBS ,
• provide sales contracts containing a warrantee,
• attend a CBS educational seminar yearly,
• identify all birds with leg band or microchip I.D.,
• sell unweaned birds only to qualified, experienced hand feeders,
• comply to and support immunization standards set by CBS ,
• disclose to the buyer any known bird defect,
• attempt to resolve disputes with the buyer,
• have high ethical standards in the care of the birds and honesty to the customer,
• not hybridize pure species of birds,
• allow customer satisfaction follow-up by CBS

Customer satisfaction is important to Companion Bird Source . Included with each bird is:

• a hatch certificate specifying the lineage of the bird so that future bird matings may be done with unrelated birds.
• A CBS Bird Care Brochure to help the customer learn appropriate care for their species.
• Written health warrantee disclosing any known bird defect.
